Busy Philipps on Cougar Town Delay, Dashed Globes Dreams, Slashed Storylines: ‘It Sucks’

Busy Philipps won’t be waking up Thursday morning with visions of Golden Globe nominations for herself or her fellow Cougar Town cast members dancing in her head. “That’s not going to happen now. No one’s seen the show this season,” says Philipps, lamenting the fact that ABC has not only failed to find a spot for the hilarious ensemble comedy on its 2012 schedule, but also reduced its Season 3 episode order from 22 to 15.

Philipps says the Cougar Town cast has already shot 10 of those episodes, and that the show’s writers may have to cut back a storyline focusing on a new love interest for Laurie. “The writers have amazing stuff planned out for this season, and now they’re going to have to condense,” she says. “I feel bad for them. I feel bad for everyone. It’s a bummer. It sucks.”

The good news, though, says Philipps, is that Season 3 contains “some of the funniest work we’ve done since the beginning of the show. I’ve seen a couple of the episodes. The one Courteney [Cox] directed came out incredible.”

Plus, teases Philipps, there’s a new addition to the cast with major breakout potential: Briga Heelan, who’s been cast as the very young woman Grayson (unwittingly) impregnated years ago. “[Briga] is threateningly funny. She’s so good! She’s going to be a huge star,” Philipps predicts. “You heard it from me first.”

What’s more, while Laurie will indeed embark on a new romance with a military man who’s stuck in the Middle East — read more about how that relationship will work in this week’s Ask Ausiello! – the show will also address her burgeoning romantic feelings with Travis. “There’s a really good episode toward the beginning of the season where the two of us discuss our relationship a little bit,” Philipps explains. “It’s funny and sweet.”

New “Cougar Town” Scoop From Ask Ausiello

Some new scoop about “Cougar Town” has been revealed by Ask Ausiello!

Question: Now that ABC has pulled Man Up, does that open up the possibility of Cougar Town coming back early? —Patrick
Ausiello: Not really. The dreadful-looking Work It has already hijacked Man Up‘s timeslot, so fingers crossed the gender bending “comedy” dies an even quicker death so C-Town can take its rightful place back on ABC’s schedule. Speaking of which, any Laurie-Travis fans out there? Well, get a load of this: Laurie falls for a military dude who’s stuck in the Middle East, and their only means of communication is via Skype. Enter Travis, who reluctantly agrees to become the Whoopi Goldberg to the soldier’s Patrick Swayze. (!!!!!!!!!)

Will Cougar Town Return Sooner Than Expected? “Fingers Crossed,” Says Star

Cougar Town may be back sooner than we thought.

When ABC yanked Courteney Cox’s hit sitcom from the midseason lineup, it was believed they’d return in March.

However…

“Hopefully sooner,” costar Busy Philipps told us last night at the Alice + Olivia fashion show benefiting Baby Buggy at the London West Hollywood hotel. “[Producer] Bill Lawrence gave us a big pep talk today saying that he thinks sooner, so fingers crossed.

“We like to think that the network knows what they’re doing,” she added with a laugh.

Even so, Philipps said, “It’s confusing…It’s a bummer, but hopefully it will be a good thing.”

Not like any of this is keeping the cast and crew from working. “There’s going to be a wedding,” Philipps said. “There’s going to be possibly another vacation someplace fun. My character has an amazing new business venture that they ripped from my personal life.”

‘Cougar Town’ News From E! Spoiler Chat

Spoiler Chat has revealed some news about “Cougar Town”!

Rebecca: Is Cougar Town in danger?
Depends who you ask. ABC did not put the show on its midseason schedule, as you probably heard, but I’m told by multiple show and network sources that the series will most definitely return this season. Just a bit later than expected. I’m told Cougar Town’s return date will be announced in January at ABC’s day during the Television Critics Association Press Tour. Also hearing some awesome things about the new season, including a very funny storyline for Sarah Chalke and a plot that sends a main character to the hospital.

‘Cougar Town’ Order Cut To 15 Episodes, Comedy Eyed For March Launch

Here is some good news and bad news for Cougar Town fans who were outraged by the fact that the third-year comedy is missing from ABC’s midseason schedule.

First, the bad news. Because Cougar Town is not on that schedule, meaning that it won’t launch before March, its full-season 22-episode order has been reduced to 15 episodes.

Now the (semi-)good news. Rumor is that the series starring Courteney Cox will return in March, taking over the Tuesday 8:30 PM slot after Work It finishes its run. It would be paired with the Tim Allen starrer Last Man Standing.

‘Cougar Town,’ ‘Scandal,’ ‘Don’t Trust the B—-’ Missing From ABC’s Midseason Schedule

On Friday, ABC announced the midseason premiere dates for its new and returning shows, but there were some notable holes.

While rookie comedy Work It snagged the post-Last Man Standing slot — taking over for Man Up! — on Tuesdays beginning in January, Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel’s half-hour series Cougar Town still remains off the network’s schedule. When the network unveiled its fall shedule in May, the Courteney Cox-toplined show was being eyed for a midseason run.

Since Cougar Town launched in 2009, the show has seen scheduling jumps. Last season, ABC slotted its spring return after more than two months off the air on a Monday night before continuing in its usual home two days later. Centered on Jules, her group of friends and her college-bound son, Cougar Town has not been the breakout ratings success that ABC has had with Modern Family, which launched the same year.

But Cougar Town isn’t the only ABC offering still awaiting a premiere. Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23, starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek as a heightened version of himself, is still off the net’s schedule. Don’t Trust the B—- follows the lives of two different women, a barista who lost a high-profile upscale job (Walker) and a savvy street smart con artist (Ritter), who end up rooming together in a New York City apartment.

Shonda Rhimes’ Kerry Washington-led political drama Scandal is also missing from the net’s lineup. The hourlong revolves around Olivia Pope (Washington), a former media consultant to the president (Tony Goldwyn) who opens up her own firm, hoping to start a new career and personal life. If and when ABC slots Scandal, this would mark Rhimes’ third drama on the network’s schedule, joining veteran medical procedurals Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.
